  • English Language with Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

English Language with TESOL at DMU allows you to combine the study of English Language with the key theoretical and practical issues involved in the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

The course is designed to enable you to develop your own ability to teach English to non-native speakers whilst enabling you to think about how language in general and English in particular functions in the world today. You will study linguistics, grammar, the evolution of the English language and a variety of writing styles, while also exploring the theory of how to teach English as a second language.

You will develop a set of linguistic and analytical skills, which will help you become a highly-skilled communicator. In the final year you will have the opportunity to put your theoretical knowledge into practice with our work placement module.

    Key features:

    • Develop specialist skills in communication and presentation in order to become an effective teacher, and have the opportunity to investigate the theoretical and conceptual issues involved in teaching written and spoken language.
    • Gain life experience by practising your language skills and networking in a different culture, with the opportunity to study abroad between years two and three.
    • Develop transferable skills ideal for employment opportunities in both the UK and abroad with the skills gained on this degree providing career opportunities interacting with, influencing and inspiring others.
    • Students have previously gained experience in the community and helped local children by volunteering for paired reading schemes with our DMU Local programme.
    • Experience showcasing opportunities by putting your theoretical knowledge into practice with our final-year placement module.
    • Learn from specialist teaching by experienced practitioners; ensuring the skills you develop are current to professional practice.
    • You can get involved with a number of societies that are relevant to your studies, including creative writing and debate societies. There are also organised theatre trips and visiting lecturers have included author Kate Forsyth and poet Benjamin Zephaniah.
    • Put your teaching theory in to practice through an international experience with our DMU Global. programme. Students have visited New York, Berlin, Prague, Paris and Tokyo on trips designed to enhance their studies.
