Istituto Europeo di Design -IED
For more than fifty years, the Istituto Europeo di Design has been operating in the fields of education and research in the disciplines of design, fashion, visual communication and management. Today, the IED is a constantly expanding international network that issues first-level academic diplomas and organises three-year courses, Masters courses, continuous professional development and advanced training courses.
The most significant milestones in the Group’s history include the foundation of the IED campuses in Milan (1966), Rome (1973), Turin (1989), Madrid (1994), Barcelona (2002), São Paulo (2005), Venice (2007), Florence (2008) and Cagliari (2009). In 2012, the Aldo Galli Academy in Como also joined the IED Group and as of 2013 courses have commenced in Rio de Janeiro, the second IED school in Brazil.
Since 1966, the IED has developed innovative and diversified teaching methodologies, focused on synergies between technology and experimentation, creativity, strategies and integrated communication, market issues and a new form of professionalism. Thus does the Istituto Europeo di Design offer young professionals working in the fields of Fashion, Design and Communication the knowledge and the effective tools they need to cater for the constantly developing requirements of the working world.
The nexus between knowledge and know-how is the indispensable starting point for developing the cultural, creative and critical skills and competencies that are the ultimate goal of education at the IED.
Partnerships with leading enterprises are a fundamental factor in the IED’s educational strategy, featuring both at every stage throughout the didactic process and in the special events held to mark the end of every academic year. As a result of the IED’s constant, active relationship with the business world, more than 200 firms contribute in various ways every year to its student training programmes.
The faculty comprises experts and professionals with the ability to teach applied skills and a constant stream of innovation. Each individual course is run in direct contact with and supported by companies operating in the fields in question.
As a school with an international vocation, the Istituto Europeo di Design welcomes students of different nationalities and cultures to all its campuses. Some 2,000 foreign students – primarily from the Far East, Central and South America and Europe – enrol in its courses every year. To date, the IED has trained students from about 100 different countries.

The educational objective of the course is to train professionals in the fashion industry who are able to take part in the creative process, the value proposition and the promotion of a brand or a fashion product and its defining style and aesthetic. Becoming a Fashion Stylist, which is a multidisciplinary and analytical profile, requires the completion of a transversal educational path which must include a solid cultural background and a strong understanding of the technical tools of photography, video-making, and the world of fashion. Fashion Stylists have the ability to create a wide framework of visual and aesthetic references for a brand and interpret and analyse trends.
From the second year students have the possibility to attend the specialisation in Fashion Communication (taught exclusively in Italian) to create and manage an integrated communication strategy, manage an advertising campaign, deal with the media and those operating throughout the sector, organize events and fashion shows, but also plan and launch a product, a designer or a brand.

Main goal of the course is training students to design spaces merging feelings and perceptions with a rigorous functional disposition. They learn to interact with the Italian design system, that complex and unique network of relations among Italian/international Designers, schools, Made in Italy businesses producing furniture/lamps and customer companies.
Students learn those expressive tools that allow to develop, assess and explain a project from the briefing to the final creation and communication: the pencil, 3D modelling and rendering software.

The Photography course is provided in the framework of the Visual Arts School and offers, along with a specific study plan and liberal arts, several crossover courses to enable students to acquire multidisciplinary skills and strategies.
Through lessons and workshops supplied by major photographers and curators on the national and international scene, students experience the various fields of photography: commercial, editorial, documentary and artistic, to learn to translate abstract concepts and photographic ideas into observable representations. Graduates from the photography BA will be able to work on both applied or self-assigned photography projects, but also in art direction or as curators, photo editors, photo retouchers or art buyers.

The course’s objective is to train Product Designers who can deal with the evolution of the traditional relation between Designer and enterprise towards a new scenario. Nowadays professionals in Design are called to broaden their competencies by stepping in not just on the product - the visible part of a project - but also on the related service, the intangible part connected to the relation among product, user and the surrounding system.
The Product Designer shows those methodological competencies allowing to design objects, strategies and services in the light of researches and market analysis, useful to industrial, self or artisanal productions. Thanks to a user-centered approach, his work is featured by sympathy between people and projects sustainability.

The course trains Fashion Designers with stylistic and creative competencies combined with the ability to define innovative products, develop stories and place a final product in the market.
The different collections and the production of prototypes are the main areas of expertise provided to students throughout the three years of study.
The course offers two specialisations: Fashion Design, aimed at training professionals able to translate their personal narration into a collection of garments and accessories, and Shoes and Accessories Design - taught exclusively in Italian language, which provides a specific training about design and production techniques that considers the peculiarity of the product.

The course in Graphic Design focuses on training visual communication experts. This professional figure works on complex “communication systems” through different media, having knowledge of advanced editing software, professional printing and production methods.
The contexts students operate in are graphic design studios, which are progressively expanding in different fields: product design, communication, fashion, photography, but also corporate communication and design areas, publishing companies, web, advertising agencies and TV production.

The Jewelry Designer is a multidisciplinary professional, who is able to combine goldsmith technical skills, design methodology and experimental research in the creation of ornaments that interact with the body.
The Jewelry Designer has the talent to manage independently the making of a jewelry collection, dealing with the different aspects of the design process, from the concept phase to the prototyping and the production. This method of transforming an idea into tangible designs also involves the communication strategy and the creation of an atmosphere around the collection.

18th edition - The Master course in Interior Design pursues an innovative human-centred approach: it’s not just about designing a space, but also what it offers to users. Interior Designers must be able to manage both technical strategic sides of a project, starting from an accurate analysis, and to provide the best solutions in terms of space enhancement and service design. They are asked to create spaces that convey strong feelings, combined with the right selection of furniture, lights, materials and colours. This original and wide approach encourages several companies to ask IED Master students to work on specific projects with the aim of designing an effective and meaningful user experience.
This international Master programme is conceived, tailored and performed completely in Milan, where the Made in Italy meshes Italian design system and where the most interesting and trendsetting events take place.

17th edition - 1st Level Master course in Design trains a new generation of designers and strategists who are ready to approach problem solving by facing consumers and clients needs in a design process. The course offers the opportunity to examine different production systems. Participants are constantly stimulated and encouraged to develop their own design methodologies, in order to produce unique design concepts responding to market demands. Throughout the use of contemporary languages and expressions, future scenarios are reached and transformed into innovative design solutions. The Master course is based on an interdisciplinary team approach, as in the best design agencies and think tanks. The curricular internship constitutes the achievement of the course as it offers the possibility to alternate a professional experience to the academic study programme. In order to facilitate the choice of professional opportunities, the curricular internship can be carried out in studios/companies - corresponding to the courses objectives - or “on campus” through a professional simulation project.
Degree awarded - The course is recognised by MIUR (Ministry for Education, University and Research) as a First Level Master Degree credit-rated at 60 credits allowing students to progress further in their studies in Italy or abroad.

20th edition - The Master in Fashion Marketing trains professionals able to face the new challenges of a world in rapid and constant evolution. In particular, the course covers the study of the most important aspects of fashion marketing management, the communication techniques - focusing on aspects of positioning strategies and brand management - the identity and consumer needs without neglecting the analysis of digital media.
The course is based on a creative approach to develop innovative thinking and experimenting new strategies in the area.

For this reason, the Master course is organised in collaboration with Landor, one of the most important branding agencies at international level. Companies such as Pomellato, Campari, Ducati, Diesel, KFC, Persol, and Lemonsoda, just to mention few, choose to share their values and expertise with IED students, to find a fresh and multidisciplinary point of view and to develop together a strategic project for their brand.
The Master takes place in two editions, the first one in November in Italian and the second in February, in English.

20th edition - The course works as a creative laboratory that guides participants to the progressive acquisition of a clear project development methodology applied to the Made in Italy know-how. Working in the the fashion system in Italy means working within a definite and unique environment that implies the
combination of design, style, manufacturing and society changes, that made history.
Participants improve their ability in exploring fashion trends, combining theoretical knowledge and awareness of Italian design with creativity and defining a strong and innovative fashion language in terms of ideas, shapes, textiles, colors and production processes.
They enhance their creative talents by practising on 4 different thematic workshops dedicated to Womenswear, Menswear, Bespoke, and Contemporary. These projects provide students with high-level tailoring methods, research and project development tools, in order to meet the market needs of the future.
Professional opportunities - Today, the career path of a Fashion Designer can develop in many different contexts. As specialists in the creative process of different kinds of apparel, they can collaborate with wholesalers, manufacturers or individual clients, or they can promote their own brands and designs.

Those involved in marketing in the fashion industry have a deep understanding of the system, processes, methods and materials. They knows how to read the industry and the market and uses their skills to become an important point of connection between the company and the target.
The Undergraduate course in Fashion Marketing addresses the cultural issues, techniques and methodologies necessary to build an innovative strategic marketing and communication project, with particular attention to the digital world, social media and the challenges of ethics and sustainability. Much of the teaching deals with the theme of marketing intended both as a communication tool for the brand and the product, and as a study discipline applied to market logics.
