About IED

For more than fifty years, the Istituto Europeo di Design has been operating in the fields of education and research in the disciplines of design, fashion, visual communication and management. Today, the IED is a constantly expanding international network that issues first-level academic diplomas and organises three-year courses, Masters courses, continuous professional development and advanced training courses.

The most significant milestones in the Group’s history include the foundation of the IED campuses in Milan (1966), Rome (1973), Turin (1989), Madrid (1994), Barcelona (2002), São Paulo (2005), Venice (2007), Florence (2008) and Cagliari (2009). In 2012, the Aldo Galli Academy in Como also joined the IED Group and as of 2013 courses have commenced in Rio de Janeiro, the second IED school in Brazil.

Since 1966, the IED has developed innovative and diversified teaching methodologies, focused on synergies between technology and experimentation, creativity, strategies and integrated communication, market issues and a new form of professionalism. Thus does the Istituto Europeo di Design offer young professionals working in the fields of Fashion, Design and Communication the knowledge and the effective tools they need to cater for the constantly developing requirements of the working world.

The nexus between knowledge and know-how is the indispensable starting point for developing the cultural, creative and critical skills and competencies that are the ultimate goal of education at the IED.

Partnerships with leading enterprises are a fundamental factor in the IED’s educational strategy, featuring both at every stage throughout the didactic process and in the special events held to mark the end of every academic year. As a result of the IED’s constant, active relationship with the business world, more than 200 firms contribute in various ways every year to its student training programmes.

The faculty comprises experts and professionals with the ability to teach applied skills and a constant stream of innovation. Each individual course is run in direct contact with and supported by companies operating in the fields in question.

As a school with an international vocation, the Istituto Europeo di Design welcomes students of different nationalities and cultures to all its campuses. Some 2,000 foreign students – primarily from the Far East, Central and South America and Europe – enrol in its courses every year. To date, the IED has trained students from about 100 different countries.

Undergraduate in Interior and Furniture Design

  • 3 Years |  Full-time | 180 Credits

The global market has a growing demand for evolved Interior Designers with competences both in the architectural composition of a space and in the design of furniture elements, in order to organise and improve the relation among space, objects and people.

The three-year course in Interior and Furniture Design trains professionals able to participate in the whole design process: from the first sketches to the final project. The goal is training The course trains Interior Designers specialised in furniture, who are able both to manage and carry out a project focused on the organisation of spaces and interior decoration, with a design-oriented attitude.

Title – The First Level Academic Diploma is recognized by MIUR (Ministry for Education, University and Research) and equated with the Bachelor’s Degree issued by Universities.

Undergraduate in Fashion Marketing

  • 3 Years |  Full-time | 180 Credits

Those involved in marketing in the fashion industry have a deep understanding of the system, processes, methods and materials. They knows how to read the industry and the market and uses their skills to become an important point of connection between the company and the target.

The Undergraduate course in Fashion Marketing addresses the cultural issues, techniques and methodologies necessary to build an innovative strategic marketing and communication project, with particular attention to the digital world, social media and the challenges of ethics and sustainability. Much of the teaching deals with the theme of marketing intended both as a communication tool for the brand and the product, and as a study discipline applied to market logics.

Master in Curatorial Practice

  • 1 Year |  Full-time

6th edition - Today, curating contemporary art requires as many skills as there are artistic contexts and languages. Whereas a solid cultural background is as important as management and communication skills, what is even more crucial for a 21st Century Curator is to build a stable network of relationships to make a curatorial project tangible and widely expandable.

For this reason, thanks to the prestige and unique position of the city of Florence, participants have the opportunity to engage critically and actively in current debates in curatorial practice and contemporary art. The course leads students to practically learn the job of a Curator in all its forms, also thanks to an international Faculty that includes some of the most prominent professionals of the art world. 

Practice - The third part is dedicated to curatorial activity and exhibition design. Students, in a group or alone, work on specific curatorial ideas in order to develop real projects proposals, that will be part of their personal portfolio together with their Final Project.

Master in Fashion Business

11th edition - Five are the distinctive features of a today Manager in the fashion industry: a deep knowledge of the system, an advanced brand strategy, marketing and communication competences, instinct for business development combined with an entrepreneurial vision. The Master course in Fashion Business covers all these areas, offering a perfect balance of know-hows for participants, whether they aim at working within companies or at launching and developing their own personal project. It immerses participants in the deep complexity of the fashion system and its processes. It gives theoretical and practical knowledge of brand and communication strategy. It enhances the instinct for business and the entrepreneurial vision. It shapes the professionals of tomorrow empowering their talents and boosting their skills. It gives them the whole fashion business intelligence they need to stand out in the market.

Students become professionals with a deep knowledge of the fashion system and acquire the skills to develop their own fashion project, learning how to start a business, launch a brand, approach the market with their products.

Career opportunities - At the end of the Master, the Fashion Business Manager can work for fashion events, public relations, fashion businesses, advertisement and press offices. Students can find a job as Brand Expert, Fashion Promoter, Fashion Marketing Expert, Creative in advertising and Consultant for new media.

Master in Graphic Design - Focus on New media

  • 11 Months |  Full-time

12th edition - The Master course in Graphic Design offers a high level of professional preparation which is based on the design method, the mastery of technical and technological skills and the continuous updating about the latest market demands.

Besides a strong cultural background on the roots and evolutions of design and visual communication, our students receive a constant training on the most used and advanced software thanks to the development of many projects. They work side by side with Italian and international companies involved in different fields in order to gain as much experience as possible on the graphic design's contemporary scenario.

A Graphic Designer graduated from this Master course is particularly involved in social issues and communication ethics, manages the creative process at its best and is ready to satify the needs of the brands he/she works for with a personal expressive touch.

10th edition - The Master course in Arts Management is a grand tour in art featuring a unique itinerant formula that brings students in three art capitals: Florence, Venice and Rome. In these cities, art merges with several business realities, allowing the acquisition of wide-ranging skills and competences they can use in different fields. Participants have the chance to spend one intensive week at IED Venezia, getting in touch with one of the most renowned art institution, such as the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. 

A special focus is put on the organization of events, as at the end of each module students have to design and manage an event related to art and culture. The Master course builds a central figure for the life of cultural institutions who deals with art project management. This professional is capable of identifying innovative content, structuring a comprehensive event schedule, planning and developing fundraising events and resource management.

Interdisciplinarity and innovation are the two keywords that characterise the whole pathway, since students get also prepared to face the new scenario of digital professions.

6th edition - What does it mean to create and manage a brand in the food industry? How to market a wine company and work on its identity? How to integrate tourism in all of that?

From branding techniques to service design, the goal of the Master course in Brand Design and Management: food, wine and tourism is to help students and young professionals to develop their skills as future Managers of the horeca industry, integrating food wine and tourism into lifestyle offers.

The course, held in Florence and Barcelona, provides transversal skills in service design applied to hospitality and tourism, understanding the different points of view of the two different cultures.

Catalunya and Tuscany built their branding strategies on the territoriality value as a key for global distinctiveness. Thanks to this Master, students have the possibility to experiment the different branding and project management methodologies that two of the most important touristic destinations in Europe successfully use.
