About LDM

Founded in 1973, Istituto Lorenzo de’ Medici (LdM) offers comprehensive academic programs and certifications in the fields of liberal arts, Italian language and culture, creative arts, design, nutrition and Italian gastronomy, sciences, and agriculture. LdM is one of Italy’s most established international higher education institutions, with its main campus in the historical center of Florence, and sister location in Tuscania, a historical town in the Lazio region.

The strength of LdM’s academic programs lies in the educational and experiential opportunities available at each of the two sites, which are deeply rooted in their surrounding locations. Our academic programs utilize exploration and hands-on experience within an inspiring cultural framework. The combination of both traditional and innovative learning styles contributes to the unique LdM learning environment.  

LdM prepares its students through a formula that integrates both theoretical and experiential learning approaches. This fusion helps cultivate individual creativity, problem-solving skills, social and environmental awareness, as well as personal development. LdM students build a wide array of technical skills and conceptual insights necessary for their future professional careers.

LdM course offerings are grouped in seven main academic divisions: Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Italian Language and Culture, Creative Arts, Design, Nutrition, Italian Gastronomy and Culture, Science and Mathematics, and Agriculture. Through LdM’s interdisciplinary approach, students can choose from over 500 different courses in 35 subject areas, all taught in English (with the exception of the Italian language courses). US study abroad students can gain college credits towards their chosen majors.

Bachelor of Arts in Italian Language

The Marist-LdM Italian Language Bachelor’s degree offers invaluable insight into the history and continuing influence Italy has in today’s global landscape. Students in this major or minor work closely with faculty and peers in Florence, while promoting communication and dialogue in a multicultural educational environment.

The program aims to enrich students’ instruction by helping them gain in-depth knowledge of the language and culture of Italy as they acquire solid training in the humanities and engage in analytical work. Through this, they develop critical thinking and communication skills necessary to continue their education or pursue a career in domestic and international fields.

The Bachelor’s in Italian Language curriculum draws on the strength of a broad multidisciplinary course structure where students can expand their cultural literacy and language skills by integrating a variety of subjects from fields which include business, communications, education, fashion, and history. This comprehensive approach prepares those with a major or minor in the subject for careers with Italian or Italian American communities and institutions in the United States and abroad or as a stepping stone to further their education. 

The diverse and dynamic country of Italy on which the course is focused allows students dedicated to studying a foreign language the unique opportunity to take advantage of the various LdM sites. LdM offers individual placements and facilitates exchange programs especially suited to sophomores or juniors wanting to study in Florence or Tuscania in Italian-speaking environments. Students are also afforded a wide range of extracurricular activities such as clubs and organized cultural events devised to offer a comprehensive educational experience.

Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts: Studio Art

The Marist-LdM Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art allows art majors to not only explore the historical and vibrant city of Florence, but also to form a connection with renowned masterpieces as they refine their own artistic voice. The city of Florence is known as the birthplace of the Renaissance, as well as modern humanism and naturalism in art, and has inspired the masters and contemporary artists alike throughout the centuries. 

An essential aspect of the program is students’ access to museums, festivals and artists in one of the most vibrant art environments in Europe. Such opportunities ensure the ideas covered in LdM’s majors are expanded and developed, and they also give students the vision and tools necessary to take on artistic endeavors within LdM and beyond.

The four-year program for a B.A. in Studio Arts from Marist-LdM is designed to stimulate and develop the individual creativity of each student, while providing not only the technical skills but also the conceptual insights necessary to sustain artistic practices. The broad-based curriculum enriches students with the tools essential for entering the competitive labor market by combining training in the visual arts with a traditional liberal arts education.

Upon completing the foundation courses in liberal arts, majors can choose from eight specializations: digital media, drawing, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture or restoration to round out their educational degree.

Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts: Art History

The Marist-LdM Bachelor in Fine Arts degree with a concentration in Art History program offers students unique access to one of the most vibrant art history environments in Europe. Florence’s rich history and extensive tradition of avant-garde intellectuals and artists spans classical antiquity through the modern age. Consequently, this city is the ideal destination for students interested in studying art and art history.  

The B.A. in Art History is a four-year degree program designed to provide both a survey of western art and an in-depth study of selected periods. The exciting course offerings utilize Florence’s rich history in the arts to teach students how to apply historical context to understand a work of art better. In addition to the required art history coursework, students must take three courses in an alternative discipline such as Italian language or studio art. 

LdM faculty are well versed in the international art business and help students gain the expertise they need to pursue an advanced degree or professional careers in art history. With the interdisciplinary curriculum provided by Marist-LdM, students have a range of concentrations they can focus on from the study of fine arts to museology.

Art history majors gain not only the technical skills but also the conceptual insights necessary for the development of artistic talent or a career as a curator or museum manager. There is also a chance for the major to explore conservation theory by taking advantage of the ties to the Conservation Studies and Restoration program to enhance their overall educational experience.

Bachelor of Science in Studio Arts

The Marist-LdM Bachelor of Science in Studio Art degree is for students who want to expand their understanding of art and artistic techniques. The diverse and dynamic city of Florence, home to some of the world’s most recognizable masterpieces, which include Botticelli’s Venus and Michelangelo’s David, along with the surrounding Tuscan countryside provide the ideal background for those interested in studying studio arts.

Students are given the exciting opportunity to draw and paint the city’s iconic architecture, historic and contemporary art, and vibrant Florentine culture.  The B.S. with a concentration in Studio Art is a four-year program designed to combine broad-based training in the visual and digital arts with a focus on studio work.

The syllabus provides a stimulating environment for students to gain technical proficiency and creative expression as they are challenged to communicate concepts in a meaningful way, showcasing their own artistic voice. The courses are geared for those who want to go beyond a traditional art education and develop interdisciplinary practices that integrate studio art and additional academic disciplines, giving them the tools necessary for success within their chosen field.

Bachelor of Science in Conservation Studies

The Marist-LdM four-year Bachelor of Science in Conservation Studies helps prepare students in the field of art conservation through in-depth investigations into materials and disciplines such as chemistry, studio arts, and art history, which are necessary for the success of future conservators. This major is held mainly at the Florence site, where masters took inspiration creating the most unforgettable works of art in the world and where many pieces remain. 

The Marist-LdM BS in Conservation Studies engages students through a four-year theoretical and hands-on approach under the guidance of expert faculty. Students can choose from either mural restoration (frescos) or painting conservation, where they have the privilege of working on objects that date from the medieval period through to the 19th century in LdM’s professionally equipped laboratory, or on-site on varying projects in and around Florence. The curriculum addresses the artistic, ethical, and technical questions pertaining to the field of art conservation and combines the liberal arts and sciences to solve problems of preservation.

The Marist-LdM BS degree in Conservation gives graduating students the opportunity to travel and work internationally in a wide variety of cultures, languages, and religions. Many alumni have had the chance to collaborate with local and national institutions in countries which include Nepal, India, and Chile.

Bachelor of Science in Digital Media

The Marist-LdM Bachelor of Science in Digital Media degree program positions students to be competitive in one of the fastest growing professional fields as they develop their own expressive voice. The interdisciplinary coursework emphasizes the importance of media in the global sphere and how to approach it through both digital and traditional techniques.   

The Marist-LdM BS in Digital Media degree is a four-year U.S. bachelor’s degree program aimed to give students the tools to analyze all digital communication needs by approaching them through graphic design, illustration, and animation. By allowing students to take projects from concept to reality, the courses lay the groundwork for them to successfully convey a message from an informed position when creating brands, identities, and objects. Through a variety of hands-on experiences, students learn the skills to make strategic decisions, read market trends and devise forward-thinking solutions to execute a final product.

Those who choose to follow the path of the Digital Media bachelor’s program are provided with multi-functional labs where they can put into practice the most recent technological and traditional techniques as they are acquired. The LdM library and the LdM digital media department library are available for students to expand their study through the vast collections of literature and media content. A state-of-the-art printing center is also on hand to cover the students’ needs from plotting to binding to cloth printing.

Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design

The Marist-LdM Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design offers a rich experience and an opportunity to acquire industry skills in the areas of design, illustration, textiles, pattern development and digital technology. The bachelor’s program not only allows undergraduate students to learn the practical and theoretical knowledge necessary to succeed but to also meet the challenges of working in the highly competitive fashion industry.

Marist-LdM four-year degree in Fashion Design is a multifaceted program that lays a solid theoretical foundation which includes the history of fashion and moves on to more practical skills such as developing techniques for fashion figure drawing and discovering how to bring designs to reality. The courses offer fashion design majors the chance to learn by working with faculty who are well-connected fashion industry professionals. Thanks to their experience and expertise in the field, LdM faculty help students gain a broad understanding of all aspects of the fashion industry. 

Marist-LdM Fashion Design bachelor students have access to LdM Fashion Department facilities and resources, including a sewing lab equipped with mannequins and industrial sewing machines for learning all the necessary techniques used in realizing designed items. B.F.A. students are provided with the tools for research in all areas of fashion, while computers and professional software give them the edge to operate as future fashion professionals.

Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design

The Marist-LdM Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design focuses on the fundamental concepts of design all the way to the design of spaces and furnishings. The program allows students to build portfolio projects as they gain an understanding of the technical design process and develop the tools for their future in architecture, interior, and product design.

The Marist-LdM Bachelor’s in Interior Design four-year degree curriculum aims to give students an innovative multidisciplinary foundation from the study of classic interior design to contemporary culture and social principles, which are crucial to the professional development of the modern designer.

The faculty is comprised of a team of professional architects, and designers who are dedicated to their profession and seek to share with students their experience and insights into the field of interior design. The faculty ensure that students take inspiration from the city of Florence as they enhance their abilities in sketching and rendering of architecture, interior, and product design. Students also learn to facilitate all phases of a project from concept to finished product by collaborating with different departments, educators, and professionals as they navigate the complexities and challenges of real-world scenarios. 

LdM classrooms are designed in a studio format to help interior design bachelor program students through all phases of study and project execution while giving space for creativity. A state-of-the-art computer lab is available for digital design and model construction; facilities contain everything necessary to transform an idea into a reality. Field trips to Florence furniture factories, designer offices, and artist studios offer students hands-on experience in all aspects of Interior Design.

Bachelor of Science in Global Marketing Communication

Communication permeates all social, corporate, private and political situations playing a vital role in today’s global society. The program is comprised of a variety of courses designed to develop critical thinking, writing, and communication skills, and provide students with a balanced education. 

The Marist-LdM Bachelor of Science in Global Marketing Communication degree provides students with the opportunity to understand better how to utilize marketing communication in today’s multimedia landscape. The curriculum provides a thorough grounding in topics such as advertising, public relations, social media, branding, strategy including analytical tools that provide insights essential in an ever-changing global marketplace.

In addition, communication majors learn the importance of how to deliver a clear message using the myriad of technology options available today as they execute a successful marketing strategy. The Istituto Lorenzo de’ Medici and Marist College offer a US Master of Arts degree in Museum Studies. 

The US Master of Arts degree in Museum Studies is approved and accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools in the US.

This degree program has been designed to meet the academic needs of qualified students from around the world.  Upon completion, students in the course are awarded a US Master of Arts Degree from Marist College.

The one-year interdisciplinary degree program of the MA in Museum Studies aims to advance students through an in-depth investigation on the field of museology. Particular attention is paid to two core principles: engagement with the public via new and traditional technologies, and the study of museums from an international comparative perspective.

Students learn how institutions operate with guidance of faculty members who have international experience in the field. The Marist-LdM master’s program is strategically located in Florence, one of the world’s most important museum centers, where master’s students have many opportunities to gain real-world experience in museum research and practices. Upon completion of the program, students receive the skills and knowledge in areas such as authentication, research, communication, and curation, which results in the critical transition from student to professional.
