Study Fashion, Design, Luxury Management or Architecture Abroad: Where Should You Begin?

Have you always wanted to study fashion in Paris, explore luxury brand management in Milan or build a career in design? Perhaps you are interested in product design, visual communication, fashion marketing or architecture but are unsure which university or country would be right for you.

Choosing to study abroad is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. There are so many courses, universities, admission requirements and expenses to consider. Where do you start, and how do you make sure you are investing in the right education?

At Maitri Global Education, we believe the first step is understanding what you want to achieve. Once you have a clearer idea of your interests and career ambitions, choosing the right course becomes much easier.

Here is what you should consider before applying to study abroad.

1. Choose a Course That Matches Your Interests

Fashion and design offer a wide range of career opportunities.

If you enjoy sketching, experimenting with fabrics and creating original designs, fashion design could be a good fit. If you are fascinated by luxury brands and want to understand how they build their reputations, consider luxury brand management.

Fashion business and fashion marketing are ideal for students interested in the commercial side of the industry, including branding, retail, advertising, consumer behaviour and digital marketing.

Product design combines creativity with functionality, while visual communication focuses on graphic design, branding, typography and visual storytelling.

Architecture is another path for students interested in buildings, spaces, structures and sustainable design. If you want to pursue architecture professionally, check the qualification and recognition requirements in the country where you intend to study and work.

Before choosing a degree, look beyond its title. Compare the curriculum, teaching approach, entry requirements and career pathways to make sure the course fits your ambitions.

2. Milan: Fashion, Luxury and Creative Business

Milan is one of Europe's important fashion and design centres. It is worth considering if you want to explore fashion design, luxury management, product design or creative business.

Some institutions to research include Istituto Marangoni, Domus Academy and NABA (Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti).

Istituto Marangoni is worth exploring for fashion, luxury and related creative business programmes. Domus Academy is particularly relevant to students investigating postgraduate education in design, fashion and related creative disciplines. NABA offers programmes across areas such as fashion, design and visual arts.

The right choice depends on your intended course and level of study, so check each institution's current offerings.

If you are applying for a creative programme, start preparing your portfolio early. Include original ideas, sketches, research and examples of your creative process where required.

For business-focused courses, develop a clear understanding of the fashion and luxury industries. Research how brands position themselves, attract customers and differentiate themselves in competitive markets.

3. Florence: Explore Creativity and Craftsmanship

Florence has a rich artistic and cultural heritage, making it an interesting destination for students who want to explore fashion, design and the creative industries.

If you are considering studying in Florence, research the available programmes carefully and compare them with your preferred specialisation.

Think about what interests you most. Is it fashion design, the business behind luxury brands, product development or visual communication? The answer should guide your university shortlist.

Do not choose a destination simply because it looks attractive. Look at the actual course content, teaching language, tuition fees and admission requirements before making your decision.

4. Paris: Fashion, Luxury and Design

Paris is closely associated with luxury fashion, internationally recognised brands and creative industries. For students interested in fashion design, luxury brand management or visual communication, it is a destination worth exploring.

Two institutions to consider are LISAA and Istituto Marangoni Paris.

LISAA is worth researching for relevant fashion, design and visual communication programmes. Istituto Marangoni Paris is an option for students interested in fashion, luxury and creative business, depending on the courses available.

If luxury brand management or fashion marketing interests you, start studying how luxury brands communicate their identity, maintain customer loyalty and adapt to changing consumer expectations.

For fashion design and other creative programmes, investigate portfolio requirements and begin developing your work well before the application deadline.

Also, check whether your chosen course is taught in English or French. Language requirements can vary between programmes.

5. Spain: Consider IED Spain

Spain is another destination to explore if you are interested in creative education.

IED Spain (Istituto Europeo di Design) offers programmes across creative disciplines, with offerings varying by campus and course.

If you are interested in fashion, product design, visual communication or related subjects, investigate the programmes available at the Spanish campus that interests you.

Compare the curriculum, teaching language, tuition fees and entry requirements before applying. Choosing the right course is more important than choosing a country based on popularity alone.

6. Consider Business and Management Programmes Too

You do not have to become a designer to build a career in fashion or the creative industries.

If you are interested in branding, marketing, business strategy or management, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore is worth exploring for relevant business and management programmes.

POLI.design, associated with Politecnico di Milano, is another institution to investigate for relevant design and professional education programmes.

Check whether a programme is an undergraduate degree, postgraduate qualification or professional course. These options have different entry requirements and serve different career objectives.

Always verify the exact course and qualification before applying.

7. Have a Limited Budget? Explore Public Universities

Studying abroad does not necessarily mean attending an expensive private institution.

Public universities in countries such as Italy and France may offer programmes at comparatively lower tuition costs, depending on the university, course and student's circumstances.

If you are working with a tight budget, compare public and private institutions before making a decision. Look at tuition fees, accommodation, living expenses, scholarships and other costs associated with studying overseas.

Remember that public universities can have different admission procedures, language requirements and application deadlines. Not every institution offers every specialisation, and some programmes are highly competitive.

At Maitri Global Education, our standard education guidance services are free. However, if you choose to apply to a public university and require additional assistance with applications, visa documentation and related formalities, a separate service charge may apply.

This charge is separate from university tuition, official application fees, visa fees and other third-party expenses. The applicable service charge and scope of assistance should be discussed and agreed upon in advance.

Our aim is to help you understand your options and make an informed decision about your education.

8. Prepare Your Application Early

Ideally, start researching universities nine to twelve months before your intended intake, allowing enough time to prepare your application.

Depending on your course, you may need academic transcripts, certificates, a statement of purpose, a portfolio, letters of recommendation or proof of language proficiency.

For creative programmes, your portfolio can be particularly important. Show your own thinking, research and the development of your ideas rather than simply presenting finished work.

You should also plan your finances early. Consider tuition, accommodation, travel, insurance and daily living expenses. Research scholarships and check the relevant visa requirements through official government sources.

Do not assume that every university follows the same application timeline. Check the current requirements for your intended course and intake.
